Have you ever thought about who is most critical of you? Maybe its not universal, but I’m pretty sure that I’m more critical of myself than anyone else has ever been.
What is good teaching? True, the result of good teaching is often demonstrated in performance. But good teaching, the act, takes place week to week behind closed doors in the private lesson. And, good teaching doesn't just haphazardly occur because someone is a naturally good teacher. The teacher must prepare for their students' lessons and always investigate and reflect on how to improve their teaching.

So fill in the blank. Good teaching is _____. Recognizing the makeup of good teaching is the first step. Read on for more tips. Don't forget to share your two cents in the comment box following the post.

Put away the Christmas tunes and pull out the sonatinas! Of course, any time is a good time for the sonatina. But I think the sonatina’s bright and crisp style offers the perfect pick me up in the dead of winter. And so it seems that most piano teacher associations focus on the sonatina in [...]

With Theodor Leschetizky as our guide, this post encourages teachers to consider the value of a method, the value of differing methods, and in contrast, the value of no method. Immerse yourself in these topics:
Who is the method book servicing -- the teacher or the student?
Give your students wings to fly -- out of the method, that is
Improvising a build to suit method
Experimenting with different methods

Why is it so hard to convince parents to buy a piano? If they are going to invest in lessons, its only logical that they provide their students with an appropriate practice instrument. I know many teachers who require a piano from the beginning. I always tell parents that within 6 months to a year they will need to get a piano. But sometimes I feel as thought they're not really listening.
This post is my way of addressing the issue front on. Hopefully it will convince some parents to take the plunge and buy a piano.

I love it when I get a new beginner student. This kind of student means one thing to me: a fresh slate! It wasn't always this way. For a long time I dreaded having a beginning student. They had a reputation of forgetting simple concepts week after week. And, it seemed like I could never get them to stay focused. But now I have just the right set of books and tools to keep them occupied during the lesson -- 45 minutes worth of goodies!
